Life insurance for 30 year olds
At 30, a 20 or 30-year level term policy is usually the lowest-cost way to protect a young family. Every common term length is open to you. The tables below show estimated monthly rates for $250,000, $500,000 and $1 million. Locking in now matters because term prices rise with each birthday and with any new health issue.

What a 30 year old usually needs coverage for
Most people buy life insurance at 30 to replace income for a partner or young children. A new mortgage, a car loan or student debt can raise the amount. If no one depends on your income yet, a smaller policy may be enough.
A common approach is to add up the mortgage balance, other debts, future childcare and college, plus several years of income. Our life insurance calculator walks through this in a few minutes.
Do not forget a partner who stays home with the kids. If that parent died, the family would need to pay for childcare and household help, so many couples insure both partners.
20-year or 30-year term at 30?
Pick the term that lasts until your youngest child is independent and the mortgage is mostly paid. A 30-year term bought at 30 runs to 60, which covers a 30-year mortgage and the years your kids are home. A 20-year term costs less but ends at 50.
Some families combine the two, a strategy often called laddering. For example, one 30-year policy for the mortgage and a 20-year policy for the years the kids are young. You pay for the larger amount only while you need it.

No-exam options and their limits
At 30 you can qualify for meaningful coverage without a medical exam. Mutual of Omaha's Term Life Express offers up to $550,000 through age 50. American Amicable's Easy Term goes to $500,000 through age 45.
Transamerica's Trendsetter Super allows non-medical underwriting through $2 million at certain ages, subject to your health answers. If you are healthy and want $1 million or more, a fully underwritten policy with an exam may still give the best price. See no-exam life insurance.
Health factors that matter now
At 30, tobacco use and nicotine are usually the biggest price factors you control. Americo, for example, requires 24 months without any nicotine product, including vaping and nicotine gum, for non-nicotine rates. Other carriers set their own rules.
Insurers also look at height and weight, prescriptions, driving record and family history. Applying while your health record is clean helps you lock in a better rate class for the whole term.
Term vs permanent life insurance at 30
Term gives the most death benefit per dollar, which is what most young families need. Whole life and indexed universal life last for life and build cash value, but cost much more for the same coverage.
The NAIC notes that some people combine cash-value coverage with term for the years they most need income replacement. If you choose term, check the conversion option. Transamerica says Trendsetter Super can be converted to permanent coverage without a new medical exam during the conversion period.
Riders young parents ask about
A children's rider adds small coverage for your kids on your policy. Mutual of Omaha's Dependent Children's Rider offers $5,000 or $10,000 for unmarried children from 15 days through 20 years old.
Children born or adopted later are added automatically. When the child's coverage ends, they can convert to permanent coverage of up to five times the rider amount without health questions.
A disability income rider can help if an illness or injury keeps you from working. Mutual of Omaha's version pays for 18 or 30 months after a 90-day wait. If your job already provides disability coverage, you may not need it.
How the application works at 30
Most no-exam applications take a phone or online interview plus database checks. Transamerica lists an application, a medical supplement, an MIB release and a prescription check, with a possible phone interview or doctor's records.
Fully underwritten policies add a short paramedical exam with blood and urine samples. It takes longer, but healthy 30 year olds can earn the best rate classes this way. You can compare quotes from several carriers at once.
No-exam coverage limits you can still use in your 30s
Simplified-issue products ask health questions and check prescription and MIB records instead of a medical exam.

Questions people ask
How much life insurance does a 30 year old need?
Enough to cover your mortgage, debts, childcare and the years of income your family would need. A calculator that adds these up gives a better answer than a flat multiple of income.
Is 30 a good age to buy life insurance?
Yes, if someone depends on your income. Premiums are based on your age and health when you apply, and they stay level for the term you lock in.
Should a 30 year old get a 20 or 30-year term?
A 30-year term fits if you have a new 30-year mortgage or very young children. A 20-year term costs less and can fit if your kids will be grown by 50.
Can I get $1 million of life insurance at 30 without an exam?
Possibly. Transamerica offers non-medical underwriting through $2 million at certain ages and risk classes, but approval depends on your health answers and records.
Is whole life a good idea at 30?
It can fit if you want lifelong coverage and cash value and can afford the higher premium. Most 30 year olds with a family get more protection from term.
Does vaping count as smoking for life insurance?
Often yes. Americo, for example, counts e-cigarettes and any vaporized nicotine as nicotine use.
Can I add my children to my life insurance?
Often yes, with a children's rider. Mutual of Omaha's rider covers each eligible child for $5,000 or $10,000 and lets them convert later without health questions.
Do I need an exam for life insurance at 30?
Not always. No-exam products like Mutual of Omaha's Term Life Express cover up to $550,000 through age 50 based on health questions and record checks.
