Final expense insurance with kidney disease

It depends on how advanced your kidney disease is. Chronic kidney disease without dialysis can still qualify. Foresters lists it in a level-benefit tier, and Mutual of Omaha offers its graded plan for CKD within 4 years. Dialysis or end-stage renal disease rules out both carriers’ underwritten plans, leaving guaranteed issue with a 2-year waiting period.

Kidney disease stages and why they matter to insurers

Final expense underwriting draws a hard line at dialysis. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) that is managed without dialysis can often be insured, while kidney failure treated with dialysis usually cannot be underwritten.

CKD is common and often silent. The CDC estimates 35.5 million US adults have it, more than 1 in 7, and most do not know. When kidneys fail, dialysis or a transplant is needed for survival.

Insurers check records such as your prescription history, so answer based on what your doctor has diagnosed or treated.

Chronic kidney disease without dialysis

Some carriers still offer day-one coverage for CKD. Foresters PlanRight lists chronic kidney disease and renal insufficiency in its Standard tier, which pays a level benefit. Kidney stones are excluded from the question.

Mutual of Omaha's Living Promise asks about CKD diagnosed or treated in the past 4 years. A yes points to its graded plan. Our waiting periods guide explains what graded plans pay in the first two years.

Royal Neighbors of America asks about CKD or kidney failure in the last 10 years. Its form notes that a yes answer does not rule out every offer.

Related conditions can share a question. Mutual of Omaha groups CKD with systemic lupus and scleroderma in a single 4-year question.

Dialysis and end-stage renal disease

Dialysis is the most common knockout for kidney patients. Mutual of Omaha excludes anyone who has ever had end-stage renal disease or required dialysis. Foresters excludes anyone who has had or been advised to have dialysis in the past 12 months.

Past dialysis can still matter. Mutual of Omaha asks whether you have ever required dialysis, not only whether you need it now.

For people on dialysis, guaranteed issue is usually the realistic choice. Plans from Mutual of Omaha, Corebridge and Gerber Life ask no health questions. If death from illness occurs in the first 2 years, they pay back premiums plus interest.

Kidney transplants and diabetic kidney disease

An organ transplant is treated strictly. Mutual of Omaha and Foresters both exclude anyone who has ever had or been advised to have an organ transplant.

Being advised to have a transplant counts at Foresters, even before surgery. If you are on a transplant waiting list, tell your agent.

Both carriers also place diabetic kidney damage (nephropathy) in a graded tier. The CDC says diabetes and high blood pressure cause about 2 of every 3 new cases of kidney failure. See final expense with diabetes.

What to have ready

Know your diagnosis as your doctor recorded it, such as chronic kidney disease, renal insufficiency or kidney failure. Note whether a doctor has ever advised dialysis or a transplant.

Add the dates of diagnosis and recent treatment. Mutual of Omaha's CKD question looks back 4 years, and Royal Neighbors looks back 10.

List related conditions too. Diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease are linked to kidney disease, and carriers ask about them separately.

When guaranteed issue makes sense

Guaranteed issue is the fallback, not the first choice. It fits when you are on dialysis, have had a transplant, or have been declined by underwritten plans.

Check age limits before you apply. Mutual of Omaha accepts ages 45 to 85, while Corebridge and Gerber Life accept ages 50 to 80.

Check coverage limits too. Corebridge and Gerber Life cap their guaranteed plans at $25,000 per person. Our waiting periods guide explains the 2-year graded period.

How to apply with kidney disease

Confirm your exact diagnosis and any dialysis dates before applying, then answer each question truthfully. Policies are usually contestable for their first two years. In New York, for example, the law lets an insurer contest a claim in that window if it proves a material misrepresentation.

If you have CKD but are not on dialysis, applying before your condition progresses may keep more options open.

Compare carriers before accepting a graded or guaranteed issue plan, since CKD without dialysis is level at some carriers and graded at others. You can compare quotes or see our guides for people over 65 and over 80. Availability varies by state and carrier.

How carriers treat kidney disease

Based on each carrier's application questions or product page, linked below. Forms change and vary by state, and the current application always controls. Final approval rests with the insurer.

Questions people ask

Can I get final expense insurance with kidney disease?

Often, yes, if you are not on dialysis. Depending on the carrier, CKD can lead to a level or graded plan.

Can I get final expense insurance while on dialysis?

Usually only guaranteed issue. Mutual of Omaha and Foresters both exclude dialysis patients from their underwritten plans.

Does stage 3 kidney disease disqualify me?

The applications we reviewed ask about CKD in general rather than by stage. Dialysis and end-stage renal disease are the main knockouts.

Can I get coverage after a kidney transplant?

Mutual of Omaha and Foresters exclude transplant recipients from their underwritten plans. Guaranteed issue plans are usually the option.

Do kidney stones count as kidney disease?

Not on the Foresters form, which excludes kidney stones from its kidney question. Check each carrier’s wording.

What does guaranteed issue pay if I die in the first two years?

For death from illness, it pays back premiums plus interest: 110% of premiums at Corebridge and Gerber Life, or premiums plus 10% at Mutual of Omaha.

Do I need to report early-stage kidney disease?

Yes, if a question asks about chronic kidney disease and you have that diagnosis. Answer as worded, even if you feel well.

Can I get final expense insurance with diabetes and kidney disease?

Yes, but expect a graded plan at many carriers. Mutual of Omaha and Foresters both place diabetic kidney disease (nephropathy) in a graded tier.
