How we chose and how we are paid

We judged each carrier on financial strength, issue ages, maximum no-exam coverage, underwriting flexibility, application speed, and whether full coverage starts on day one. We used only facts we verified in carrier documents and AM Best releases. All term policies here pay the full benefit from the start; none has a waiting period.

PolicyOcean is an independent agency, and carriers pay us a commission when we place a policy. It does not change your premium. See how we make money. We use best-for labels instead of an overall ranking, because the right choice depends on your age and health.

Two kinds of no-exam life insurance

No-exam coverage comes in two forms, and the difference matters for price and limits. Accelerated underwriting is full underwriting that uses prescription, medical and other data in place of an exam. It offers the best rate classes and high limits, but the carrier can still order an exam if something needs a closer look.

Simplified issue uses a health questionnaire and database checks, and the carrier does not order an exam. Limits are lower and rate classes are fewer, but it accepts some health histories accelerated programs would send to an exam. Our no-medical-exam guide explains both.

Some products blend the two. Prudential SimplyTerm is applied for fully online with no exam or labs, while Transamerica offers non-medical underwriting inside a fully underwritten term product for eligible applicants.

Best for each situation

Best for high limits if you are healthy and under 60: John Hancock. ExpressTrack covers ages 18 to 60 up to $5 million with no exam or labs for eligible applicants, and it includes Vitality rewards. See the John Hancock review.

Best for applicants with a health history who want full underwriting: Prudential. PruFast Track reaches $5 million for ages 18 to 64, and Prudential lists underwriting credits for more than two dozen conditions. Its SimplyTerm option is fully online up to $1 million. See the Prudential review.

Best for high limits at older ages: Transamerica. Trendsetter Super issues to age 80 and offers non-medical underwriting through $2 million, subject to age and class limits. See the Transamerica review.

More best-for picks

Best for living benefits included: Mutual of Omaha. Term Life Express includes terminal, chronic and critical illness benefits at no extra charge, up to $550,000 for ages 18 to 50. Only standard rate classes are offered. See the Mutual of Omaha review.

Best for diabetes or mild COPD: Foresters. Strong Foundation is non-medical to $500,000 for ages 18 to 80, and Foresters says people with diabetes or mild COPD may still qualify. See the Foresters review.

Best for the fastest decision: American-Amicable and Americo. American-Amicable’s e-app returns a decision in about 30 seconds for Easy Term up to $500,000. Americo’s term series gives instant decisions up to $450,000 and is common for mortgage protection.

Trade-offs to know before you apply

No-exam does not mean no questions. Carriers commonly check prescription history and the MIB database. Inaccurate answers can give the insurer grounds to contest a claim, usually within the first two years, so answer every question accurately.

Simplified issue usually costs more than fully underwritten coverage for healthy people. If you are in excellent health, an accelerated program or a traditional exam can earn a better class. Compare estimates on our term life rates by age pages before you choose.

Check conversion rules too. Most term policies here can convert to permanent coverage without new health questions, but the deadlines differ by carrier. Prudential SimplyTerm cannot convert at all, and Mutual of Omaha Term Life Express cannot convert to a fully underwritten product.

Who should consider a different product

If you are over 80 or only need $10,000 to $50,000 for funeral costs, final expense insurance is often a better fit. It is whole life, so it does not expire. If you need coverage for life with cash value, see our whole life guide.
