Company overview and ratings

Prudential Financial is a large, publicly traded insurer based in Newark, New Jersey. Its individual term and IUL policies are issued by Pruco Life Insurance Company, and in New York by Pruco Life Insurance Company of New Jersey. It is not related to the UK company Prudential plc.

AM Best affirmed A+ (Superior) financial strength ratings for The Prudential Insurance Company of America, Pruco Life and Pruco Life of New Jersey on May 8, 2026. In that action AM Best lowered its view of Prudential’s risk management because of misconduct investigations at its Japan unit. The rating itself did not change.

Term life: EssentialTerm and SimplyTerm

Prudential’s main term line is the EssentialTerm suite. EssentialTerm Value and EssentialTerm Plus offer 10, 15, 20 and 30-year terms from $100,000 to $65 million. Value converts for the first seven years or until age 70. Plus converts for the whole term or until age 70.

Both include a conversion credit of up to one year of premium if you convert in years two through seven. A terminal illness rider is included. The older Term Essential product is still listed and offers an optional Living Needs Benefit rider.

SimplyTerm is Prudential’s fully online, no-exam option. It offers 5 to 20-year terms from $25,000 to $1 million, but it cannot be converted to permanent coverage. Compare it with other no-exam carriers.

Prudential also sells PruTerm One, a one-year term policy that requires an exam and can be bought once per lifetime. It suits short gaps, such as waiting for a new employer plan to begin.

PruFast Track and impaired-risk underwriting

PruFast Track is Prudential’s accelerated underwriting. The June 2026 agent guide lists ages 18 to 64 and $100,000 to $5 million, with exams and labs ordered only when needed. Prudential’s consumer page still shows older limits of ages 18 to 60 and up to $3 million, so ask your agent which applies.

Prudential is known for working with health histories. Its underwriting guide lists credits for more than two dozen conditions, including diabetes, atrial fibrillation, sleep apnea and build. Part of the health interview can be done online or by phone.

Prudential uses prescription and medical claims databases, motor vehicle records and its own database report in underwriting. Rates use age last birthday, which can help if you are close to a birthday.

IUL and other permanent coverage

Prudential sells three indexed universal life policies: Protection IUL, Momentum IUL and a survivorship IUL. Momentum is the most cash-value focused. Index options include S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 strategies with a 0% floor. It also sells universal, variable and indexed variable universal life.

Prudential does not sell traditional whole life. Some third-party reviews mention a Prudential final expense policy, but it does not appear in Prudential’s own product menu, and we could not confirm it. For burial coverage, see our final expense guide.

Who Prudential fits

Prudential suits people with a manageable health condition who want full underwriting. Its credits for diabetes, atrial fibrillation, sleep apnea and build can lead to a better class than a simplified product.

It also fits high-income buyers who need very large term amounts, and people who expect to convert term to permanent coverage. EssentialTerm’s conversion credit rewards converting in years two through seven.

SimplyTerm fits people who want a small, fast online policy and do not need conversion. Seniors looking for burial coverage should compare final expense companies instead.

Pros and cons

Pros: A+ ratings; term limits up to $65 million; conversion credits; accelerated underwriting up to $5 million; credits for many common health conditions.

Cons: no whole life or verified final expense product; SimplyTerm is capped at $1 million and is not convertible. The Living Needs Benefit carries a processing fee, and its nursing home option is not offered in several states.

Buying through an independent agent vs direct

Prudential sells through its own advisors, online through SelectQuote for some term, and through independent brokers. An independent agent can compare EssentialTerm with other A+ carriers and help decide whether your health history earns a better class at Prudential.
