Senior Choice final expense

Senior Choice is American-Amicable’s final expense whole life policy, with three plans set by your health answers. Immediate pays the full benefit from day one. It issues from age 50 to 85, up to $50,000 through age 75 and $25,000 after that.

The Graded plan pays 30% of the benefit for death in year one and 70% in year two, then 100%. That is partial coverage rather than a refund, which can matter to a family. The Return of Premium plan refunds premiums plus 10% interest for early death. That window is three years for issue ages 50 to 64 and two years from 65.

On both Graded and Return of Premium, accidental death pays the full amount at any time. Both cap at $25,000. American-Amicable also sells final expense at ages 0 to 49 from $10,000.

Riders and underwriting

Senior Choice includes a terminal illness benefit that can pay up to 100% of the death benefit if life expectancy is 12 months or less. The Immediate plan adds a confined care benefit of 5% of face per month in a nursing home, where available. Optional riders cover grandchildren, children and accidental death.

Underwriting is simplified issue with prescription and MIB database checks and no exam. The e-app gives an on-screen decision in 30 seconds or less. A phone interview is needed only if the applicant is 71 or older with no prescriptions, or the payer is not the applicant, spouse or child.

Term and mortgage protection

American-Amicable also sells no-exam term. Easy Term offers 10, 20 and 30-year terms up to $500,000 for ages 18 to 45 and $300,000 from 46. Home Protector is a mortgage protection term with 15 to 30-year terms and the same limits.

Terminal, confined care and chronic illness riders come at no cost on the term products, and they convert to permanent coverage. Both accept ratings up to Table 4, which helps applicants with moderate health issues.

Its SafeCare Term offers level term to age 95 for ages 18 to 75, up to $500,000. Applicants 65 and older complete a phone health interview.

Who American-Amicable fits

American-Amicable suits seniors 50 to 75 who need up to $50,000 of day-one final expense coverage. It also suits people who want a quick decision during a single appointment.

Its Graded plan fits applicants with recent health problems who want partial coverage rather than only a refund in the early years. Its Return of Premium plan fits people whose health rules out the Graded plan.

Easy Term and Home Protector fit younger families and homeowners who want term without an exam. Applicants with moderate health issues may benefit from acceptance up to Table 4.

Pros and cons

Pros: day-one coverage up to $50,000 for ages 50 to 75; a graded plan that pays partial benefits instead of only refunds; very fast e-app decisions; term up to $500,000 with no exam.

Cons: an A rating rather than A+; graded and return-of-premium plans cap at $25,000. The group also sells look-alike products under different names in different agent channels, which can confuse buyers.
