Life Insurance in Arizona: Rates, Rules and Retiree Considerations
Arizona law requires a 30-day grace period on life policies and gives you 30 days to return a policy that replaces an older one. If an insurer fails, the state guaranty fund covers up to $300,000 in death benefits. The tables below are typical estimates, since each carrier files its own rates.

Help, license checks and lost policies in Arizona
The Arizona Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions (DIFI) licenses insurers and agents and takes complaints. You can reach it through difi.az.gov.
Before you buy, ask the agent for their Arizona license number and National Producer Number, and confirm them with DIFI. Availability of any product depends on your state and the carrier.
Use the free NAIC Life Insurance Policy Locator first. If a participating insurer finds a policy and you are the beneficiary, it contacts you.
The Arizona Department of Revenue holds unclaimed property for rightful owners. Searching and filing a claim cost nothing, and the state uses missingmoney.com for searches.
Free look and replacement rules
If a new policy replaces one you already own, Arizona requires the insurer to tell you that you can return it within 30 days of delivery. You get an unconditional full refund of premiums and fees.
For a policy that is not a replacement, the return period is set by the policy itself. Read the notice on the first page when the policy arrives. Arizona annuities have their own rule: 30 days if you were 65 or older when you applied, and 10 days otherwise.
The replacing insurer must also notify your existing insurer within five business days. That gives your current company a chance to explain what you would give up.
Grace period
Arizona policies must allow a grace period of 30 days, or one month of not less than 30 days, for premiums after the first. The policy stays in force during that time.
If a claim happens during the grace period, the overdue premium is simply deducted from the payout. After the grace period, an unpaid policy can lapse, so set up automatic payment if you can.
Guaranty fund protection
The Arizona Life and Disability Insurance Guaranty Fund protects residents if a licensed insurer fails. Under A.R.S. 20-682, it covers up to $300,000 in death benefits and up to $100,000 in net cash surrender value.
The aggregate cap for one person is $300,000, except for health benefit plans. If you need more coverage, consider splitting it across carriers. Our carrier reviews show financial strength ratings.
Community property and beneficiaries
Arizona is a community property state, according to IRS Publication 555. Property acquired during marriage is generally owned by both spouses.
That can include a policy paid with income earned during marriage. If you want to name a child from a prior marriage or anyone other than your spouse, talk with an Arizona estate attorney first.
Final expense and term for Arizona buyers
Arizona is home to many retirees, and many of them buy final expense coverage to cover a funeral. It is a small whole life policy with level premiums. See the typical estimates by age above, and our pages for over 65 and over 75.
The NFDA put the national median funeral with viewing and burial at $8,300 in 2023, and $6,280 with cremation, excluding cemetery costs. We did not find an Arizona-specific figure from a state source.
Younger Arizonans with a mortgage or kids usually need term life first. A 20-year term covers the years when your income matters most.
Buying a policy in Arizona, step by step
Start with the goal. A funeral fund points to a small whole life policy; a mortgage or income gap points to term life. The life insurance calculator helps size it.
Compare quotes from several carriers, since each files its own rates. Health answers, tobacco use and age drive the price far more than where you live.
If you are replacing a policy, expect a replacement notice and use your 30-day return window. Keep the old policy until the new one is in force.
Before you sign, confirm the beneficiary. In a community property state, that choice can have legal effects for married couples.
Last, set up automatic payment and tell your beneficiary where the policy is kept. Families cannot claim a policy they do not know exists.
