The Nevada Division of Insurance handles licensing and consumer complaints. Call (775) 687-0700 in Northern Nevada, (702) 486-4009 in Southern Nevada, or (888) 872-3234 toll-free statewide.
The Division asks consumers to start complaints online. Its website also has a "Verify a License" page for checking an agent before you buy. Availability of any product depends on your state and the carrier.
Start with the free NAIC Life Insurance Policy Locator. Participating insurers search their records and contact you directly if you are the beneficiary.
The Nevada State Treasurer collects and returns unclaimed property. Search its site at nvup.gov for the deceased person's name.
Free look: 10 days, or 30 for a replacement
Nevada requires every new life policy to include a 10-day free look from delivery. If you return it with a written cancellation request, the insurer refunds premiums and policy fees.
If the new policy replaces an existing one, the window is 30 days. That extra time helps you compare what you are giving up, such as cash value or an expired contestable period.
Grace period and claim payment
Nevada policies must allow 30 days, or one month of not less than 30 days, to pay a late premium. Coverage continues during the grace period, and insurers may charge up to 6% annual interest on the late amount.
Nevada also sets a firm claim deadline. Insurers must pay life insurance proceeds within 30 days after the insured's death, or pay interest from the date of death.
For families, this means a beneficiary should file the claim and send a certified death certificate as soon as possible. Keep a copy of everything you send.
Guaranty association protection
The Nevada Life and Health Insurance Guaranty Association protects residents if a member insurer fails. Under NRS 686C.210, it covers up to $300,000 in death benefits and up to $100,000 in net cash surrender value per life.
The aggregate cap for one person is $300,000, excluding health benefit plans. If you want more coverage, splitting it across two carriers keeps each policy within the limit. See our carrier reviews.
Community property in Nevada
Nevada is a community property state, per IRS Publication 555. Property acquired during marriage is generally owned by both spouses.
A policy paid with marital income may be shared property. If you plan to name someone other than your spouse, talk with a Nevada estate attorney before you sign.
Review your beneficiary form after any marriage, divorce or birth, and keep a copy with your will. Tell your beneficiary which carrier issued the policy so they know whom to call.
Term or final expense in Nevada
Working Nevadans with a mortgage or kids usually start with term life. A 20-year term is the most common choice; see the typical estimates above and our rates at age 50.
Retirees often buy final expense insurance instead, a small whole life policy that does not expire. The NFDA put the national median funeral with viewing and burial at $8,300 in 2023, and $6,280 with cremation, excluding cemetery costs. We did not find a Nevada-specific figure from a state source.
If you have health problems, compare simplified issue before guaranteed issue. Guaranteed issue usually limits the payout for the first two to three years; see waiting periods.
Buying a policy in Nevada, step by step
Decide what the policy must pay for. A mortgage and lost income usually call for term life; funeral costs call for a small permanent policy.
Compare quotes from several carriers. Each carrier files its own rates and weighs health history differently, so one decline does not mean every carrier will decline.
Write down the delivery date when the policy arrives. With only 10 days to return a new policy in Nevada, read it the same week.
If the policy replaces an older one, you have 30 days instead. Keep the old coverage until the new policy is approved and in force.
Set up automatic payments from the start. Nevada's minimum grace period is 30 days, half of California's 60, so a missed payment can become a lapse sooner than people expect.
